“Each family possesses its own particular tale of the past – a tale which can bewitch us with as great a sense of instant romance as can ever the tradition of kings.”
– Llewellyn Powys
Living in the challenging reality of the Middle East, I searched for role models who served whole heartedly as cultural mediators. While searching, I read the biography of Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche from a Cross-Cultural perspective. I then discovered this fascinating man whose Cross-Culturalism became his major strength. As a Cross-Culturalist and Mediator myself, I deeply appreciate the rare and courageous life this man lead bridging two worlds: Tel-Aviv and Jaffa.
Walking in the steps of Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche you will follow a cross cultural leader, business man and intellectual. Chelouche was both Israeli and Maghrebian, Zionist and Arab and a proud Jaffan and Tel Avivian. You will discover how his rich cultural identity lead him to become one of the most respected, influential and honoured men of his time. Following Chelouche’s biography you will commence at the Jaffa port, proceed to Manshia neighbourhood and end at Neve Tzedek, Tel-Aviv. As you go you will encounter Chelouche’s vivid personality that was composed of multiple cultures. Thanks to these cultures Chelouche became not only a leader and influencer but also a crucial mediator between the Muslims of Jaffa, the Jews in Tel-Aviv and the Christian British.

“We got to hear stories about Jaffa from the locals who both were born there, grew up there and live there until today. It was very special and left me wondering about what is required to really meet one another when we come from different cultures.”

“I learned a lot not only on the architectural point of view but also on the historical one. I usually come to rest and to enjoy the beach. This time I’ve decided to take a shoot with Encounters and I was delighted! It was great to feel the city from inside!”
